Forget those post-Christmas blues and get back on the road again

Back on the road again

I always feel a little sad taking down the tree on “Little Christmas”. Once the decorations and sparkling lights are boxed away and the tree has been dragged un-ceremoniously out the door (or window) for the nearest collection point, there can be no denying that all the razzmatazz, hullabaloo and magic of Santa is over for another 11 months. Last Tuesday evening in the Silke household was even more poignant than normal as our five year-old-daughter was let stay-up late to help packing the crib and taking down the tree. As the tree was carried out shedding needles at an enormous rate, she too shed a few tears and was very, very sad that her tree — the one she had picked on her own with the help of the nice Coillte man — was now dead.

Roscommon and Galway in early season showdown

This Sunday in Tuam Stadium a Roscommon team that is beginning to improve and show some signs of unity and purpose under the stewardship of their great white managerial hope — Fergal O'Donnell — take on Liam Sammon’s exciting cocktail of youth and experience in the FBD league final. After the managerial trauma of the last few years culminating in John Maughan’s well publicised resignation last season, all Roscommon supporters will hope that O’Donnell who had a stunning success with the county minors in 2006 will provide a genuine stabilising influence for the county team in the coming years.

Salthill do enough, but must improve to beat Corofin

Last Saturday evening Salthill/Knocknarra were expected to defeat a very limited St Brendan’s handily. Instead a shock of epic proportions was on the cards if the Ballygar men had a little more ability, poise, and self-belief.

Mayo look to avoid falling Down

Mayo may well be the bookies’ favourites to win Sunday’s All Ireland semi-final clash against Down, but the favourites’ tag is something that Ray Dempsey has never paid much heed to as an inter county player and as an inter county manager since he took the reins of the Mayo minor side in 2008. The Knockmore man who brought last year’s batch of minors to within seconds of claiming Mayo’s first All Ireland minor title since 1985 last year, is once again only 60 minutes away from the last Sunday in September and an All Ireland final day out in front of a packed Croke Park.
